PHOTOS: Hungarian team wins bronze medal in the Bocuse d’Or final!
The Hungarian team of chef Bence Dalnoki and commis Patrik Nyikos won the bronze medal at the Bocuse d’Or World Final. It was announced on the second day of the event in Lyon, France, on Monday evening. The winner of this year’s final is Denmark.
The Bocuse d’Or, the world’s most prestigious international cooking competition, is held every two years in the hometown of the eponymous chef Paul Bocuse. This year, 24 teams from 24 nations prepared their dishes on Sunday and Monday.
Bronze for the Hungarian team
The Hungarian Bocuse team arrived with a second place at the European qualification. The team was headed by Bence Dalnoki, sous chef of the two Michelin-starred Stand Restaurant, who was assisted by Patrik Nyikos as commis. The coach was Tamás Széll, while the team was chaired by Zoltán Hamvas, President of the Hungarian Bocuse d’Or Academy.
This year’s World Final was won by Denmark, Norway came second and the bronze medal went to Hungary, their strongest ever performance. The best commis (assistant) of the competition went to Norway, the best dish to Sweden and the best platter to France.
Dish theme and plate theme
For the first time, the Social Commitment Award was presented, which was won by the Mexican team. Also for the first time, the competition had a children’s jury, which awarded a special prize to Japan. At the Bocuse d’Or finals in Lyon, teams traditionally have to prepare two dishes: a spectacular dish, which must be presented whole and then served on a plate, and a dish that is prepared to be served on a plate.
The obligatory ingredients for the dish (dish theme) were monkfish, black mussels and Mediterranean scallop. The plate theme proved to be a unique one, as teams had to prepare a children’s menu, three courses for 15 people. Each course had to include pumpkin, the starter had to be vegan and the main course had to include eggs.
